2009 Highlights...Jan...Feb...Mar...Continued

February was a very busy month, thanks to Margaret she helped me keep my sanity.

A group of 19 from our church met at a local restaurant for an early Valentines day dinner on February 7th. We had a great meal as well as fellowship.

We met Jake and Tammy at Winterplace Ski Lodge in Beckley W. Va. on February 14th. It was a beautiful February day with temps in the 5o's. Margaret and I along with Jake, Tammy and their children and a couple of their freinds had a day of fun. Margaret zipped down the tubing lanes with the best of them.We left for Nashville on February 16th and arrived at Aunt Kate's early in the evening.
Guess what..............She had dinner ready. She had prepared an awesome meal. We ate and had a great visit. Unfortunately, Sheila was sick and unable to make it. ( I ate her portion) The next day was a long one as we left early the next morning and drove to Dickson and Franklin. We had good visits with Uncle Jack and Anita, Uncle Charles and Jean and James and Azelia. Later that day we headed back to Nashville and went to dinner with Uncle Luther and Aunt Ray. Aunt Kate was her courteous self. Not only did she open her house to us but she drove us to the airport the next morning. We landed in LA around 11:30 and immediately headed for the Princess cruise terminal in San Pedro, Ca. The ship headed out for Hawaii at 4 pm that afternoon. We enjoyed good food and great entertainment. We were on the water for 4 days and nights without seeing land. ( 3,000 miles) Our first port was Hilo, known as "The Big Island". On our shore excursionwe drove to the Volcanoes National Park. That trip included a trip up Mount Mauna Kea. The summit was 13,796 feet, which is the highest peak in Hawaii. We visited the Kilauea volcano, one of only a few active volcanoes in the world. Later that day we had lunch at the Volcanoes Restaurant and had a great view of Kilauea Volcano. On our way back to the ship we visitedAkaka Falls and visited several lava fields. The tour concluded with a tour through a 400 footlava tube that was over 300 years old.
Our second port the next day was the island of Oahu in Honolulu. We visited the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor, the USS Oklahoma Memorial and the USS Missouri "The Mighty MO" where the declaration of surrender for WWII was signed. On our way back to the ship we visited the US Nationl Cemetery.
Our third port of call in Kauai was cancelled because of high seas with waves over 14 feet. Princess Cruiselines gave us the royal treatment because of this and pampered us with food and entertainment. Our last port of call in Hawaii was the island of Maui. We enjoyed whale watching and an Atlantis Submarine dive trip. This was one of the highlights of our entire trip. The submarine went down to 128 feet and we saw some unusual aquatic sights. We ate at a sandwich shop and visited some of the shops while in Maui before heading back to the ship.
We headed back to LA and made our last port of call stop in Ensenada, Mexico. Even though we did disembark the ship, we were advised against any shore excursions because of the political unrest and drug wars going on at that time.
We docked back at LA on March 4th and headed back to Nashville. Sheila picked us up at the airport and Yes Aunt Kate had dinner ready again.....what a woman. Margaret and I both said we were ready for some good home cooking. Aunt Kate must have known......She had soup beans and corn bread. I love that woman!!!!! After a good nights rest we headed back to reality. We made it home safe and sound on the 5th. (Thank you God)
Celebrating birthdays in February were Mary Vanover on the 1st, Charlie Vanover 5th,
Jonathan Vanover 16th and Elaine Deel on the 27th.
After returning home from our cruise on March 5th, we decided to chill out for a while. We got back to church and visited with family and friends. We are ready for Spring.
